Follow the steps below to check a Google Docs for passive voice.

1. Install ProWritingAid in Google Docs

First, you need to install ProWritingAid through Google Workspace Marketplace. This tool checks for passive voice and other writing issues in your document.

In Google Docs, go to the “Extensions” menu, click “Add-ons,” and select “Get add-ons.”

In the search bar, type ProWritingAid.

Click on the first search result.

Then click “Install.” Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

2. Open ProWritingAid in Your Document and Start Reviewing

Once installed, you can use ProWritingAid in any Google Doc. Go to the “Extensions” menu, hover over ProWritingAid, and choose either “Summary Report” or “Improve Document.”

Summary Report provides an overview of writing issues, including passive voice.

Improve Document allows you to address each writing issue step by step.

Click “Improve Document” for an interactive editing experience.

Scroll down on this sidebar until you see the result for “Passive Voice.” ProWritingAid will list passive voice issues under “Passive Voice.” Click on it to view the result in detail.

3. Review and Fix Passive Voice Suggestions

The result will be listed in this section.

Review the text in this area. You can improve the underlined texts here. Click on the ones with violet underlines to check the passive words used, for example, the phrase “A decision was made.”

For example, if it flags “they were enjoyed by everyone,” highlight it, then it may suggest changing it to “everyone enjoyed them.” You can accept the suggestion by clicking on it or manually edit the sentence based on the recommendation.

4. Repeat the Process for Additional Sections

To check other sections of your document, highlight new text, then wait for the suggestion to pop up. If no suggestion appears, as with the text “A decision was made,” manually edit your text.

5. Perform a Final Review

Review the document after making changes to ensure the sentences flow smoothly and correct any passive voice. To exit the editor, click on the “x” icon.
