Change Google Docs’ Spell Check Language

Follow the steps below to modify Google Docs’ spell-check language.

1. Open the File Menu in Google Docs

We have here a sample text of both American and UK English. We’ll use it as a reference for our guide. Since our document is set to the language “English (United States)” by default, there are underlined words under the section for UK English which are “colour” and “organised.”

2. Select the Language Option From the Menu

In the drop-down that appears, scroll down and click on “Language.” This will bring up a list of available languages.

3. Choose Your Preferred Language From the List

From the language list, select the language you want to set for spell check. For our example, we’ll change “English (United States)” to “English (United Kingdom)” This will change the document’s spell check to the new language instantly.

4. Test the New Spell Check Language

Now the underlined words (color and organized) are now under the American English section. It means that the spell check language change has been done correctly.

5. Reload the Document If the Language Didn’t Change

Click on the reload icon to refresh your document and see if changes are applied now.
