Place a Tilde Over a Letter in Google Docs
Putting a tilde over a letter on Google Docs can be achieved using three effective methods: the ‘Special Characters’ option, the ‘Keyboard Shortcut’ and the ‘Character Map’ app on Windows. We will discuss how to use each method in the following sections.
Method 1: Use the ‘Special Characters’ option from Google Docs
Follow the steps to insert a tilde over a letter on Google Docs using the Special character option.
1. Click and Drag to Highlight the Letter Where Tilde Should Appear
Click at the starting point of the text, then drag the cursor to highlight the exact spot where you want to add the letter with a tilde. Highlighting ensures the tilde letter will replace or be added to the selected text. On the word “Pinata,” let’s highlight the letter “n.”
2. Click on the “Insert” Menu at the Top of the Screen
At the top of the Google Docs screen, locate and click the “Insert” option. This opens a menu with tools for adding symbols and characters.
3. Scroll Down and Select “Special Characters” to Open the Character Tool
From the Insert menu, scroll down to “Special characters” and click to open it. This tool contains all special symbols and accented characters.
4. Type “Tilde” or the Desired Letter with Tilde in the Search Bar
In the Special Characters box, locate the search bar and type “tilde” or the letter you want with a tilde (like “n tilde”). This filters the results to show only the tilde characters.
5. Click on the Letter with the Tilde to Insert It into Your Document
When you see the letter with the tilde in the search results, click on it. This will add the tilde character at the cursor location in your document.
6. Close the Special Characters Box After Inserting the Tilde Letter
Once the character is inserted, close the Special Characters box to continue editing by clicking “x.” The tilde letter will remain in your document where the cursor was placed. Repeat the process for every letter you want to put tilde on.
Method 2: Add a Tilde Using Keyboard Shortcuts
Here are the steps below to add a tilde using keyboard shortcuts.
Note: A numeric keypad is required for this method.
1. Highlight the Letter in Google Docs Where You Want to Add the Tilde
Click and drag to highlight the letter in the word where you want to add the tilde. For example, in the word “Pinata,” highlight the letter “n” to add the tilde over it.
2. Press and Hold Alt, Then Type the Character Code on Numeric Keypad to Insert Tilde
Hold down the Alt key and, on the numeric keypad, type the character code for the desired letter with a tilde. For example:
- Type Alt + 0241 to insert “ñ.”
- Type Alt + 0209 to insert “Ñ.”
Release the Alt key to add the character to your document. As you can see here, the “n” was automatically replaced by “ñ.” To add more letters with a tilde, repeat the steps above.
Method 3: Add a Tilde Using the Windows Character Map
Below are the steps to insert a tilde over a letter using the Windows Character Map.
1. Open the Character Map Application on Your Computer
Open the Windows Start menu, type “Character Map” into the search bar, and select the app when it appears. This tool displays all available special characters.
2. Locate the Desired Tilde Character in the Character Map
In the Character Map, scroll to locate the tilde letter you need, or type the letter name in the search bar if available. Common options include “ñ” and “Ñ.”
3. Select and Copy the Tilde Character from the Character Map
Once the tilde letter is highlighted, click “Select” to add it to the selection box.
Then click “Copy” to place it on your clipboard.
4. Paste the Copied Character in Google Docs
In your Google Docs document, place the cursor at the desired location, then paste the copied tilde character by pressing “Ctrl + V.”
