1. Insert a Footnote

Click to place the cursor at the end of the sentence or phrase where you want to add a footnote. Using our sample text, we will insert a footnote after the word “penicillin”. Go to Insert in the top menu and select Footnote from the drop-down menu.

Alternatively, you may simply press Ctrl+Alt+F on your keyboard. This automatically inserts a superscript number after the word “penicillin” and a corresponding footnote area at the bottom of the page.

2. Add Text to Your Footnote

After the footnote is inserted, your cursor will automatically jump to the footnote area at the bottom of the page. Type the content of your footnote here. We will add a footnote that provides additional information about Fleming’s discovery.

3. Format the Footnote Text

Select the text in the footnote and use the toolbar options to change the font type, size, or add formatting like bold or italics. For this example, we will italicize the footnote text and make it bigger for better readability.

4. Customize the Footnote Margins

Go to Format in the top menu beside “Insert” and select Headers & Footers to open a dialog box. This will allow you to customize how far the footnote text will be displayed from the top and bottom of the page. Enter your desired number in inches and click Apply.

5. Review and Check Consistency

Scroll through your document to ensure that all footnotes are consistently formatted throughout the document.
