Can You Change the Underline Color in Google Docs?

Unfortunately, Google Docs does not currently provide a built-in feature to change the underline color independently of the text color. However, you can achieve a similar effect by simply drawing a line and positioning it under your text. We explain how to do this in the next section. 

How to Change the Underline Color in Google Docs

Here’s how you can change the underline color in Google Docs using the drawing option: 

1. Insert a Drawing

Suppose you already have your text.

In the top menu, click on “Insert.” Click on “Drawing” and then “New.”

2. Draw a Line

In the Drawing dialog, click on the “Line” tool and draw a horizontal line.

Tip: Hold Shift while dragging to create a perfectly straight line. 

3. Change the Line Color

Click on the “Line color” icon in the toolbar and select your desired underline color.

4. Adjust Line Thickness

Click on the “Line weight” icon and adjust the thickness of the line to match the appearance you want.

5. Click Save and Close

Once satisfied, click the “Save and close” button in the top right corner of the Drawing window to insert the colored line in your document.

6. Position the Line Under the Text

Choose either “Behind text” or “In front of text” for the wrapping option so you can move the line around. Use the arrow keys or drag the line with your mouse to position it directly under your text.
